In order to support the development of Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language promotion and Chinese cultural transmission in the world, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarships” program. Recommending Institutions could recommend excellent Chinese language teachers and scholars, as well as talented students of Chinese language to study in the host institutions in China
As one of the host institutions, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (hereinafter referred to SWUFE or Host Institution) welcome applicants to pursue study in SWUFE.
The 2017 Confucius Institute Scholarship Categories are:
1.Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Students
2.Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students
3. Scholarship for 4-Week Study Students
Application is open to applicant who owns a non-Chinese citizenship, aged between 16 and 35, in good health condition and without criminal records, (Applicants who are currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not exceed the age limit of 45. Undergraduate program applicants shall not exceed the age limit of 20).
II. Eligibility and Admission Date
1. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Students
This category is provided with a sponsorship for 11 months enrolled in September 2017. International students who are now studying in China after Jan 1st, 2017 are not eligible for this scholarship.
A. Application is open to overseas Chinese language teachers or students who are going to pursue Master Degrees in Chinese Language Education area. Applicants should have a minimum score of 270 in HSK Test (Level 3) and has taken HSKK test. Goal score of One-Academic-Year Study Program is 180 in HSK Level 5.
B. Application is open to Chinese language major students and scholars. Applicants should have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 4), and has a medium level of HSKK test. Based on the order of applications and Chinese language level, the applicants will be reviewed for Full scholarship or Partial Scholarship.
2. Scholarship for One-Academic-Semester Study Students
This category is provided with a sponsorship for 5 months. Applicants should have no prior experience of studying in China. Admission for students of one-Semester Study is either in September 2017 or March 2018. （Exact Registration Date is subject to change and will be written in Letter of Admission）
A. Application is open to overseas Chinese language teachers or Confucius Institute students who will pursue Bachelor Degree in Chinese Language Education area. Applicants should have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Level 3 Test and have taken HSKK test.
B. Application is open to overseas applicants who have relevant professional background and aim to promote the spreading of Chinese culture. Applicants should have taken HSK Test.
C. Application is open to scholars or students who is studying in Chinese Language relevant majors. Applicants should have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Level 3 Test and has taken HSKK test. Based on the order of applications and HSK level, the applicants will be reviewed for Full scholarship or Partial Scholarship.
3. Scholarship for 4-Week-Study Students
Admission for students of one-Semester Study is either in July 2017 or December 2017. （Exact Registration Date is subject to change and will be written in Letter of Admission.）Applicants should have no prior experience of studying in China and have taken HSK Test.
A. Application is open to overseas Chinese language teachers.
B. Application is open to registered Confucius Institute students.
C. Application is open to registered Confucius Institute teachers.
III. Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarships hosted by SWUFE
Recommending institutions and Host Institution should examine the completeness, validity and accuracy of applicant’s name, nationality and permanent address on the passport. If the following documents are not in Chinese or English version, notarization documents should be provided.
1. A scanned copy of the passport photo page. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant notarized documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.
2. Score reports of the HSK, HSKK tests taken within two years
3. Recommendation letters signed by the heads of the recommending institutions (please provide objective comments on the applicant, including whether the applicant is a student of Confucius Institute or not. Chinese language teachers shall submit an employment verification letter and a reference letter provided by the institutes they work for.)
IV. Application Procedure
For application, please log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarships website (http://cis.chinese.cn) to register and check the list of recommending institutions and host institutions. Applicants should complete the Confucius Institute Scholarships Application Form online, and upload the scanned copies of relevant supporting documents. After results come out online, awardees could confirm with the host institutions and print out scholarship certificates at the website. Please register on time and follow the procedures of host institutions.
Hanban will conduct an overall assessment of all applications and admit applicants on the basis of competitive selection. Normally, the admission results will be announced within 2 months before the registration date.
After confirming with the successful applicants, SWUFE will post “Letter of Admission”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China” (JW202 Form), and other relevant documents to the recommending institutions within 15 working days.
V. Scholarship Coverage, Criteria and Academic Assessment
The Confucius Institute Scholarship has two categories. Full scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (not for 4-week-study students) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses. Partial scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.
Tuition fee is under the overall planning and utilization of Host Institution to provide teaching, management, Chinese language proficiency tests (both HSK and HSKK, once for each), and cultural and social activities for scholarship holders. One-Academic-Year Study and One-Academic-Semester Study programmer are required to attend Chinese language proficiency tests before graduation (both HSK and HSKK, once for each), and Host Institution reimburses test fees. Tuition is not including personal expenses, for example, textbooks fees and local attraction tickets, etc.
Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of Host Institution which should provide scholarship holders with free dormitory rooms (usually double rooms). Those who live off campus with the permission of Host Institution are entitled to accommodation allowance from Host Institution by month or by quarter. The allowance criteria is RMB700 per person on monthly basis.
Living allowance is granted on monthly basis for One-Academic-Year and One-Academic-Semester students by host institutions. The living allowance for One-Academic-Year and One-Academic-Semester students is RMB 2500/month for each one. Students must register at host institution on time; otherwise the scholarship will be terminated. Enrollment status is based on semesters of Host Institution. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the admission month are entitled to the full allowance of that month. Students, who are enrolled after the 15th of that month, are only entitled to half of the allowance. The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month later upon the graduation. During the study, for any students who is absent from China of personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding legal holidays), the allowance will be suspended during absence. Allowance will be terminated in case of schooling suspension or school punishment or dropping out for personal reasons.
Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the Host Institution in accordance to relevant regulations on international students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. The insurance fee is RMB800 per person for One-Academic-Year students or RMB400 per person for One-Academic-Semester students.
1. Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.
2. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.
3. Scholarship winners who cannot register with the Host Institution on time should inform the host institution about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reasons, the scholarship will be canceled.
4. Scholarship will be canceled for those who do not pass the admission physical examination, drop out, or take schooling suspension during the study.
