Overview

Chengdu is located in southwestern China, the capital of Sichuan Province, a sub-provincial city, and a national central city. It serves as a hub for logistics, trade, finance, technology, culture, education, transportation, and communications in the region. As one of the first "National Historical and Cultural Cities", Chengdu is renowned as the "Land of Abundance." It has been repeatedly recognized as "China's Happiest City" and ranked first among "New First-Tier Cities." With a long history of development, Chengdu stands as one of China's earliest developed cities that has maintained prolonged prosperity.

Culture

As one of the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities and the birthplace of ancient Shu civilization, Chengdu is home to the Jinsha Site, which dates back 3,000 years. The city boasts numerous historical and cultural landmarks, such as the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Wuhou Shrine, and Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and has been designated as a top tourist destination in China. Chengdu is also the hometown of giant pandas, hosting the country's only Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base. Sichuan cuisine, one of China's Four Major Cuisines, is celebrated for its diverse dishes and balanced flavors that emphasize freshness and boldness, with a distinctive use of spiciness and numbness. Chengdu has been honored as a "City of Gastronomy" by UNESCO.

Economy

As a core city of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, Chengdu ranks 6th in China by GDP since 2024 and 35th among global financial centers. Over 300 Fortune Global 500 companies have established a branch or office in Chengdu, ranking first among cities in central and western China.

Internationalization

In 2021, over 16,000 foreign residents lived in Chengdu. As of 2025, 24 countries have set up consular institutions in the city, ranking third in the Chinese Mainland. Chengdu has established 115 international sister cities and friendly cooperative relationships. It hosted the 31st World University Games and 12th World Games.

Safety

Chengdu has been repeatedly awarded the title of "Demonstration City for Peaceful China Construction" by the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission. The city has achieved comprehensive coverage of the "Sharp Eyes" project and the "Skynet" surveillance system, with nearly 100% video monitoring coverage in public areas. Over 95% of residents express a strong sense of security.
